When Your Friday Afternoon Takes an Unexpected Turn: Confessions of a Real Estate Photographer

One thing I’ve learned after photographing hundreds of homes is this:

The house is rarely the hardest part of the job.

It’s usually something completely unexpected.

This past Friday afternoon, I was wrapping up a real estate photography shoot. Everything had gone smoothly, and all I had left was capturing a few photos of the garage.

I stepped inside.

Click.

The door leading back into the house automatically locked behind me.

“No problem,” I thought.

“I’ll just open the garage door.”

Except…

The garage door opener had apparently already started its weekend.

Button? Nope.

Wall control? Nope.

Garage door? Not moving an inch.

So there I was—a professional real estate photographer, surrounded by thousands of dollars in cameras, lenses, drones, and lighting equipment…

…locked inside the garage of a house that didn’t belong to me… or even my client.

Naturally, I did what any professional would do.

I texted my Realtor.

“I’m locked in the garage.”

I’m pretty sure she thought I was joking.

When she realized I wasn’t, the responses ranged somewhere between concern and trying very hard not to laugh.

Meanwhile, I was inspecting every possible escape route like I was filming a prison break.

Could I pick the lock?

Nope.

Could I crawl through a window?

Also no.

Could I convince the garage door that it was 4:30 on a Friday and we all deserved to go home?

Still no.

After a few minutes of troubleshooting—and swallowing what little pride I had left—I finally released the garage door and manually lifted it open.

Freedom.

The Lesson?

People often see the finished product: the bright, inviting listing photos, cinematic videos, perfectly timed drone shots, and polished marketing that helps homes stand out.

They don’t see the photographer sweating through a Florida attic for the perfect angle.

Or waiting twenty minutes for the neighbor to finish mowing.

Or timing exterior photos around afternoon thunderstorms.

Or…

Getting trapped inside a stranger’s garage on a Friday afternoon because a garage door decided it was off the clock.

Those moments never make the MLS listing.

But they’re usually the stories that get told long after the photos are delivered.

So if your real estate photographer is running a few minutes behind one Friday afternoon…

Maybe don’t blame traffic.

There’s always a chance they’re negotiating their release from a garage.

Happy Friday from Higginbotham Media.

Because sometimes the best story from a photo shoot has absolutely nothing to do with the house.
